15 Best Mini Split Heat Pump Brands - Ranking These ACs (3)

Quick Guide To The Top Brands

1. Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi mini-split heat pumps are reliable, advanced, and industry-leading in many categories. They’re expensive, but my top pick for homeowners with flexible budgets willing to invest in top-tier systems.

2. Daikin

Daikin mini-split systems are very high-quality and offer solid performance in any climate. Like Mitsubishi, they’re pricey, but I recommend them for homes in regions with extreme temperatures.

3. MRCOOL

MRCOOL mini splits are my top picks for homeowners who want high-quality DIY systems. They lack the cutting-edge technology of Mitsubishi or Fujitsu but offer a good balance of affordability and features.

4. Senville

Senville mini-split heat pumps are feature-rich and perform well. They won’t last as long as top-tier brands, but they’re one of my top picks for homeowners with mid-range budgets.

5. Pioneer

Pioneer mini-splits balance affordability with good efficiency and decent performance. I typically recommend them for homeowners in mild climates who don’t need all the premium features.

6. Fujitsu

Fujitsu produces some of the most advanced heat pump mini split systems I’ve worked with. These high-quality units are expensive and best for homeowners investing in a long-term solution.

7. Cooper & Hunter

Cooper & Hunter is a less well-known brand, but their mini splits are competitively priced and have some premium features.

8. Friedrich

Friedrich prioritizes reliability and performance with durable, American-made mini splits. I recommend them to homeowners willing to invest in premium HVAC systems that are easy to maintain.

9. Goodman

Goodman is a trusted mid-range brand that delivers straightforward mini splits. The technology isn't cutting-edge, but I recommend their mini-splits for homeowners who prioritize dependability.

10. Gree

Gree mini splits are similar to Daikin (They are an OEM manufacturer) but are 10-15% cheaper. I recommend them to homeowners seeking high-spec units without a premium price tag.

11. Klimaire

Klimaire is an emerging HVAC brand with budget-friendly mini-splits ideal for DIY enthusiasts. I don’t recommend them for extreme conditions.

12. Rovsun

Rovsun is an increasingly popular brand with some very affordable mini systems. I recommend them for basic cooling/heating needs as an alternative to window units.

13. OLMO

OLMO is a budget brand that prioritizes affordability. They have few unique features but can meet basic residential heating/cooling needs.

14. Della

DELLA offers very affordable mini-splits. They are less durable than other brands, but I recommend them for budget-conscious buyers as shorter-term solutions.

15. Costway

COSTWAY mini split heat pumps are an entry-level option I recommend to those who want simple, low-cost systems suitable for rental homes.

Understanding Mini Split ACs Vs Heat Pumps

Mini-split air conditioners, heat pumps, and mini-split heat pumps all control the temperature in your home. However, they all work slightly differently.

A mini-split system is the unit's configuration - an HVAC system with an indoor and outdoor unit that doesn’t need ductwork. ‘Heat pump’ or ‘air conditioner’ is the description of how they function.

Heat pumps move heat in and out and can provide heating & cooling.[1]. Air conditioners cool the air with a compressor, so you only get a cooling effect.

So you can have a mini-split AC or mini-split heat pump. However, if somebody says a mini-split system, they are likely talking about a mini-split heat pump.

Mini-split heat pumps are my preferred option because they provide energy-efficient heating & cooling in one. Below I share which is best in each situation:

Mini-split Air Conditioners - Cooling Only Option

Best For:
  • Homes without ductwork that only need cooling.

How It Works:
  • There are indoor and outdoor units with no ductwork. Air is pulled in, cooled, and distributed indoors to cool the room.

Pros
  • Ductless/Easy to install
  • Zoned cooling for targetted temperature control
  • Energy efficient
  • Quiet

CONS
  • No heating function
  • More expensive than portable or window ACs

Heat Pumps - Offer Heating & Cooling

Best For:
  • Whole home heating and cooling in moderate climates.

How It Works:
  • Heat is transferred indoors from outdoors by extracting heat from the ground and/or air. These units can be used with a ducted or ductless system.

Pros
  • Provides heating & cooling
  • Energy efficient
  • Can be used with ducted or ductless systems

CONS
  • Higher upfront cost
  • Less effective in extreme conditions

Mini-Split Heat Pumps - Heating & Cooling For Year-Round Comfort

Best For:
  • Homes without ductwork that desire both cooling and heating.

How It Works:
  • Heat is transferred between indoors and outdoors to provide zonal heating and cooling. These units use a combination of heat pump functionality and mini-split setup.

Pros
  • Ductless
  • Easy to install
  • Offers heating and cooling
  • Highly energy efficient
  • Quiet operation
  • Precise zonal control

CONS
  • Higher upfront cost
  • Requires several indoor units to cover whole home

  • Higher upfront cost
  • More complex installation

Performance

Mitsubishi’s mini split systems are high-quality, durable, and reliable, with corrosion-coated heat exchangers and advanced inverter technology - including their unique Hyper-Heating Inverter technology (H2i) that lets them operate in temperatures as low as -13°F.

They outperform high-end brands like Daikin or Fujitsu. I recommend them for homes that need effective, long-term temperature control.

How Energy Efficient Is It?

Mitsubishi mini split systems are some of the most efficient on the market.

Most models have at least a 20 SEER rating (against an industry average of 14-18), and their top-range PH series reaches an industry-leading 33.1 SEER.

I recommend them to homeowners trying to reduce their energy bills.

What Is The Warranty Like?

Mitsubishi's warranty covers 5 years on parts and 7 years on the compressor.

However, the warranty is far more impressive when installed by a Mitsubishi Diamond Contractor - offering an extension of up to 12 years for parts and the compressor.[2]

Mitsubishi's warranty is about what I expect for this price range, but it's solid and shows their confidence in the quality of their systems.

Is It Value for Money?

Mitsubishi is an expensive brand, but the energy savings and overall quality easily justify it in my experience.

I don’t recommend Mitsubishi mini splits for homeowners with tight budgets, but their units offer clear value for money for those willing to spend more upfront.

Series Overview

Floor Mounted

Best for rooms with limited wall space and homeowners who want an unnoticeable indoor unit.

Key Features:
  • Compact design
  • Dual air outlet for improved airflow and temperature control
  • Hyper-heating inverter technology
  • Whisper quiet

GS-M Series

Best for energy conscious homeowners looking to control air quality as well as temperature.

Key Features:
  • High 20+ SEER ratings
  • Hyper-heating inverter technology
  • Advanced air filtration/Nano Platinum Filter
  • Wi-Fi control

WR Series

Best for larger homes or small commercial spaces.

Key Features:
  • Wider operating range suitable for varied conditions
  • High capacity options (24000+ BTU)
  • Easy installation and maintenance

Top Model: Mitsubishi MSZ-GS24NA

It’s my top pick because it balances performance and value. The 22,000 BTU is more than enough for most homes and the 20.5 SEER keeps running costs down.

It also has a broad operating range (down to -5°F) and smart features for easy year-round temperature control.

Shop Mitsubishi Mini Splits Here

Model To Avoid: MSZ-GL09NA-U1

It’s a decent mini-split system, but it’s outdated (and been discontinued - so you can’t buy it directly). It has fewer features and struggles in cold conditions as well.

Performance

Daikin mini splits perform consistently in any climate. The advanced inverters in the Auroroa and Atmosphera Series can operate in temperatures as low as -13°F, and their whole product line offers precision temperature control.

The consistent heating and cooling make them ideal for homes with cold winters and hot summers.

How Energy Efficient Is It?

While not quite as efficient as Mitsubishi models, Daikin mini-splits are still some of the most efficient I’ve worked with and cheaper to run than average HVAC systems.

The Aurora and Vista Series are above 18 SEER rated, and the Atmosphera line is even higher - with the Atmosphera FTXM09VVJU reaching 27.4 SEER2.

What Is The Warranty Like?

Daikin’s warranty is outstanding, head and shoulders above most brands I work with.

Most units have a comprehensive 12-year limited warranty on parts and compressors, with additional warranty options available with their extended Asure service plan.

The warranty demonstrates their confidence in their mini-splits and increases the long-term value of their units.

Is It Value for Money?

Like Mitsubishi, Daikin mini splits have a higher upfront cost because of their advanced technology and premium materials.

However, I think the mix of reliability (backed up with an industry-leading warranty) and low-running costs makes them great long-term value for money - especially in unpredictable climates where they’ll see a lot of use.

Series Overview

Atmosphera

Best for homeowners in particularly cold conditions who are seeking highly efficient units.

Key Features:
  • Extremely efficient (20+ SEER on all models)
  • Can operate in extremely low temperatures
  • Whisper quiet as low as 20 dB
  • Advanced inverter technology

Emura Silver Wall Mounted

Best for urban apartments and luxury homes that prioritize design and advanced features.

Key Features:
  • High output with intelligent sensors to adjust airflow
  • Wi-Fi enabled
  • Sleek, stylish and unobtrusive design
  • Good efficiency (up to 18 SEER)
  • Advanced inverter technology

Aurora

Best for homes in regions with harsh winters and hot summers.

Key Features:
  • Operates in extreme cold conditions with high capacity heating
  • Advanced air filtration to improve air quality
  • High SEER ratings (up to 20 SEER)

Vista

Best for budget-conscious homeowners with more basic heating and cooling needs.

Key Features:
  • Cost effective and reliable HVAC solutions
  • Simple, straightforward design for easy installation
  • Good energy efficiency ratings (17-19 SEER)

Top Model: Daikin FTXM12WVJU9 (Atmosphera Series)

This Daikin mini split is highly efficient (25.2 SEER), operates in cold conditions, and has impressive coverage.

It also has smart features, like the intelligent eye sensor, to make it more user-friendly and efficient. It’s my top pick for homeowners battling hot and cold conditions year-round.

Shop Daikin Mini Split Heat Pumps Online

Model To Avoid: Daikin FTXS09LVJU (Vista Series)

I used to work with the Daikin FTXS09LVJU, but I find it outdated now. The 16 SEER efficiency is lower than most Daikin mini splits and it only has basic features - with no air filtration.

I recommend upgrading to the Auroroa series instead as they offer better value for money.

Pros

  • Wi-Fi connection in most models
  • Single and multi-zone options

CONS
  • Shorter lifespan than premium brands like Mitsubishi
  • Less effective in cold climates.

Performance

MRCOOL mini-split systems are tough and durable, with a unique corrosion-resistant Gold Fin® Condenser ideal for coastal areas or high-humidity regions.

MRCOOL units don't operate as well as Daikin in extreme conditions, but their compressor systems provide reliable and accurate temperature control.

How Energy Efficient Is It?

MRCOOL mini-splits are surprisingly efficient for the price. Almost all their units are Energy Star rated and have 17 SEER or more, and the DIY 4th Generation Series can reach 22 SEER.

Mitsubishi and Fujitsu are still my top picks for energy-efficient operation but MRCOOL mini splits are far more efficient than traditional HVAC systems.

What Is The Warranty Like?

MRCOOL offers a reasonable warranty across their product lines:

  • DIY Easy Pro ductless systems - 2-year limited parts warranty and 1-year limited compressor warranty.
  • Advantage 4th Generation ductless systems (non-DIY) - 2-year limited parts warranty, 1-year compressor warranty, and 1-year remote control warranty.
  • The DIY 4th Gen ductless mini split systems - impressive 7-year limited compressor series and 5-year parts warranty.

DIY installations also get full coverage (which is uncommon), but make sure it’s installed per their guidelines.

Is It Value for Money?

MRCOOL is one of the best value brands I work with. The upfront costs are competitive and units are roughly $800-$1500 cheaper than premium brands. Plus, you can save an extra $800-$2000 in installation costs with their DIY systems.

MRCOOL mini-splits can't match the long-term performance of top-tier brands, but I appreciate their mix of affordability and features.

Series Overview

MRCOOL makes many mini-split systems, but I prefer their newer models. There are 3 modern series I typically recommend:

DIY Easy Pro

Best for budget-conscious homeowners and DIY enthusiasts who are comfortable with home projects.

Key Features:
  • Most budget-friendly mini splits
  • Easy DIY setup with pre-charged lines
  • Competitive 15-18 SEER ratings
  • Most models have Wi-Fi connectivity
  • Quietly performs under 40 dB

Advantage 4th Generation

Best for homes with more diverse needs that want all-in-one heating + cooling + air purification.

Key Features:
  • Professional installation required
  • High efficiency ratings of 17-21 SEER
  • Corrosion resistant components are good for humid areas
  • Air filtration built in
  • Additional operating modes (including sleep and eco)

DIY 4th Generation

Best for DIY confident homeowners willing to invest time in order to save money on installation costs.

Key Features:
  • Advanced DIY systems with pre-set lines
  • High efficiency up to 22 SEER
  • Wi-Fi enabled
  • 7 year warranty even with DIY installation

Top Model: MRCOOL DIY-12-HP-115B25

This MRCOOL mini-split is ideal for rooms up to 500 square feet, has an impressive 22 SEER, and is easy to install DIY.

It also has smart connectivity for smartphone app control and monitoring.

The combination of features, performance, efficiency, and comparatively low upfront cost makes it my top pick for homeowners with less flexible budgets.

Shop MRCOOL Mini Splits Online

Model To Avoid: MRCOOL 3rd Gen Models

I rated the MRCOOL 3rd Generation mini split systems, but the 4th Gen models have completely overshadowed them with higher SEER ratings, more consistent performance, and DIY options (lowering the upfront costs).

I recommend investing in a DIY 4th Gen or Advantage 4th Gen model over a 3rd Gen system.

  • Easy to install - with some DIY models

CONS
  • Shorter lifespan than premium brands like Mitsubishi
  • Lack of advanced features in budget models
  • Only premium models perform well in cold climates

Performance

Senville is a popular brand with mini-splits that outperform most mid-range systems.

Their units have a range of running modes, run quietly (under 30dB), and offer up to 33,000 BTU for impressive coverage.

The AURA Series can also operate down to -22°F, useful in colder climates.

How Energy Efficient Is It?

Senville mini-splits are efficient thanks to the new inverter technology in most of their newer models.

The most affordable models are 17-20 SEER, with top-tier units like the Aura SENA-09HF-16 reaching an impressive 28.1 SEER.

What Is The Warranty Like?

Senville’s warranty is solid. You get a 7-year compressor and a 2-year parts warranty. It doesn't match Daikin, but I think it adds to the long-term value of their mini-splits.

Is It Value for Money?

Senville mini-splits are more affordable than premium brands but still have high-efficiency models with advanced features.

I think the AURA and LETO Series both provide excellent value for homeowners seeking top-tier units without the price tag.

Series Overview

The LETO and AURA Series are my top Senville mini-split lines.

Aura

Best for homeowners in cold climates who are seeking energy-efficient systems.

Key Features:
  • Options ranging from 9000 BTUs to 36000 BTUs
  • Excellent 21-28 SEER ratings
  • Operates down to -22°F
  • Single and multi-zone configurations
  • Smart connectivity
  • “Follow Me” function

LETO

Best for budget-conscious homeowners cooling small to medium-sized spaces in moderate climates.

Key Features:
  • Options from 9000 BTUs to 24000 BTUs
  • Good energy efficiency (17-19 SEER)
  • Operation in temperatures down to -5°F
  • Smart features
  • Programmable settings
  • Some models are DIY friendly

Top Model: Senville SENA-18HF (Aura Series)

This Senville mini-split heat pump is my top choice for heating and cooling up to 1,000 sq. ft.

The 22 SEER rating is impressive, and the resilience in extreme cold makes it effective year-round. Plus, it has Wi-Fi connectivity and user-friendly controls.

Shop Senville Mini Split Heat Pumps Online

Model To Avoid: Senville LETO Series 9,000 BTU SENL-09CD

This older model has a 16 SEER, lacks advanced features, and struggles in spaces above 450 square feet.

Newer models perform far better, and I recommend spending a bit more on the Senville AURA Series SENA-12HF/Z.

  • Cold climate performance from the Ultra and Pro series
  • Quiet Operation

CONS
  • Limited advanced features in budget models
  • Hard to source replacement parts
  • Outsourced production

Performance

Pioneer mini splits, like the Diamante Ultra and Pro, offer good cooling and heating capacity.

They use modern inverter technology, have single & multi-zone capabilities, and provide accurate temperature adjustment.

I find them less effective in cold conditions than Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric - but they work well in most medium-sized homes.

How Energy Efficient Is It?

Pioneer mini-splits typically have a 17-20 SEER rating, with the Diamante Ultra Series offering up to 23 SEER.

They don't match premium brands (like Mitsubishi Electric) but are economical to run.

What Is The Warranty Like?

Pioneer offers a 5-year warranty on most units and compressors and a 2-year warranty on parts. This warranty also covers DIY installations.

Pioneer replacement parts can take a while to source, so I recommend reporting issues as quickly as possible.

Is It Value for Money?

Although the build quality isn’t as good as premium Mitsubishi Electric or Daikin, I think the effective and efficient Pioneer range offers value for money at a fair price point - particularly the premium Diamante Ultra Series with smart features & advanced inverter technology.

Series Overview

There are 3 main Pioneer series I recommend to homeowners.

Diamante Series

Best for small to medium sized spaces and homeowners on tighter budgets.

Key Features:
  • Many sizes available up to 36000 BTU
  • Up to 20 SEER
  • Inverter technology
  • Relatively quiet at under 45 dB
  • Some models have Wi-Fi connectivity

Diamante Ultra Series

Best for tech-savvy homeowners seeking advanced features.

Key Features:
  • Sizes available up to 24000 BTU
  • Highly efficient / up to 21.5 SEER
  • Advanced inverter technology
  • Built in smart features
  • Remote control
  • Quiet operation under 40 dB

Diamante Pro Series

Best for reliable heating in colder climates.

Key Features:
  • Options available to 36000 BTUs
  • Most efficient Pioneer series, up to 23 SEER
  • Hyper-heating technology
  • Smart control and integration
  • Enhanced durability for heavy-duty performance
  • Most expensive line

Top Model: Pioneer Diamante Ultra Series

This Pioneer mini-split heat pump provides fast heating and cooling in spaces up to 500 square feet.

It’s highly efficient (23 SEER) and works in cold conditions (-13°F), with smart connectivity and multiple operating modes.

It’s a pricier Pioneer model, but I recommend it for homes that need reliable, precise cooling.

Shop Pioneer Mini Split Heat Pumps Online

Model To Avoid: Pioneer WYS009AMFI17RL

This outdated Pioneer system doesn't measure up to its current range.

It lacks advanced features, only has a 17 SEER rating, and the cooling capacity is only suitable for small spaces.

It is affordable, but I recommend spending slightly more on a newer model that offers better long-term value.

  • Premium build quality for long-term use

CONS
  • Very high upfront cost
  • Complex and expensive installation - no DIY options
  • More complicated to use, with a wide range of features
  • Availability can vary between regions

Performance

Fujitsu mini-splits perform better than almost any others (bar Mitsubishi) and have earned a perfect score.

They offer powerful heating and cooling and use advanced inverters that maintain precise temperatures while staying whisper quiet (below 25dB).

They can also work in cold conditions (down to -15°F) for year-round temperature control.

How Energy Efficient Is It?

Fujitsu mini split energy-efficiency ratings are industry-leading.

Their Halcyon Series reaches an impressive 26 SEER, and the AirStage Series can achieve a world-class 33.1 SEER. You won’t find higher ratings in the mini-split market.

What Is The Warranty Like?

I can't fault the quality of Fujitsu systems, and they back it up with a comprehensive 5-year parts warranty on parts and a 7-year compressor warranty.

Is It Value for Money?

Fujitsu systems are high-quality but very expensive.

However, the industry-leading AirStage Series are some of the most advanced on the market and offer unparalleled performance and efficiency.

The price can be hard to justify, but I think they offer long-term value for homeowners with large budgets.

Top Model: Fujitsu Airstage 12LZBS1

The Airstage LZBS1 Series is without a doubt the best Fujitsu option.

They have the most efficient models (33.1 SEER), precision temperature control from cutting-edge compressors, and work noiselessly (under 25dB).

This model performs exceptionally well, and it’s my top pick for homeowners willing to invest in top-tier systems.

Shop Fujitsu Online

Model To Avoid: Fujitsu Halcyon ASU7RLF1

This system has the Fujitsu build quality, but I find it limited in capacity, output, and efficiency, and it struggles in cold temperatures compared to other models.

I recommend stretching the budget to get a Fujitsu Airstage LZBS1 Series mini split instead.

Pros
  • Good value options
  • Consistent efficiency
  • Solid cold climate performance
  • Quiet operation
  • Wi-Fi connectivity in most models

CONS
  • Less consistent quality
  • Less durable than other mid-range brands
  • Poor performance in extreme heat

Performance

For the price, I think Cooper & Hunter mini splits perform well.

Their Sophia range has impressive coverage (24K BTU), and most models operate in very low temperatures (-22°F) thanks to the hyper-heating functionality.

How Energy Efficient Is It?

Cooper & Hunter modes range from 16 to 22 SEER, with the Sophia Series offering the highest efficiency ratings.

They can’t compete with Mitsubishi or Fujitsu, but they’re solid in the mid-range price category.

What Is The Warranty Like?

Cooper & Hunter offers a competitive 7-year warranty on compressors and a 5-year warranty on parts for their mini split units, which is generous for their price point.

They also offer limited warranty coverage for DIY installations.

Is It Value for Money?

While Cooper & Hunter mini splits are less durable than Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, or Mr. Cool, I find their combination of efficiency, cold climate performance, and multiple operating modes makes them a real asset for year-round temperature control.

The MIA and Sophia models offer the best value mid-range options.

Series Overview

MIA Series

Best for medium-to-large sized spaces in mild to moderate climates.

Key Features:
  • New generation offering more affordable performance
  • Up to 22 SEER
  • Operates in -13°F conditions
  • Inverter technology
  • Quiet operation, as low as 32 dB
  • DIY friendly options

Sophia Series

Best for larger homes in areas with cold winters.

Key Features:
  • Slightly more expensive range
  • Up to 21.5 SEER
  • Operates in -22°F conditions
  • Turbo cooling
  • Self cleaning options
  • As quiet as 26 dB

Top Model: Cooper & Hunter CH-NY12MIA-115VO/I (MIA Series)

The Cooper & Hunter MIA series features the latest technology with a lower price tag.

This model is my top pick for homeowners seeking great value temperature control over large areas because it features:

  • Up to 24K BTU for high-capacity cooling/heating
  • 20.8 SEER for economical operation
  • 26dB noise levels
  • Smart integration & app controls

Model To Avoid: Cooper & Hunter CH-S12FTXAM (Alpha Series)

This mini-split performs well, but it’s older, and the technology is outdated. It only has a 16 SEER rating and lacks the latest smart features.

I recommend getting a newer MIA series mini-split instead.

  • Versatile installation options
  • Strong warranty and customer service

CONS
  • Expensive
  • Complex installation
  • Less well-suited to cold conditions

Performance

The top-tier Friedrich Air Pro and Air Pro Ceiling Series impressed me with their strong performance and durability.

They lack some of the sophisticated features of Mitsubishi Electric, but the components are high quality, and the inverter is cutting edge, allowing for precise heating over large areas.

How Energy Efficient Is It?

Friedrich mini splits are efficient thanks to the high-quality variable compressor systems, and most units have Eco modes to keep operating costs low.

The Floating Air Pro Series offers SEER ratings up to 23.3, with lower-spec models typically having 16-19 SEER.

What Is The Warranty Like?

Friedrich offers a 7-year warranty on parts and a 5-year warranty on the compressor. It’s good coverage and around what I expect at this price point.

Is It Value for Money?

I think Friedrich mini-splits offer reasonable value for money but the upfront price is prohibitive, and the complex installation adds to the cost.

However, the quality of the materials means they will work reliably for years with very little maintenance.

Series Overview

Floating Air Pro Ceiling Series

Best for homeowners seeking a low-profile solution to fit seamlessly into their home.

Key Features:
  • Space saving ceiling installation
  • Variable speed compressor systems
  • Up to 21.5 SEER
  • Ultra-quiet under 25 dB
  • Integrated air filtration
  • Smart integration

Floating Air Pro Series

Best for homeowners willing to pay more for premium performance.

Key Features:
  • Sleek, low profile design
  • Operates in temperatures down to -4°F
  • Smart integration and voice control
  • Precision inverter technology
  • Super easy servicing and maintenance

Top Model: Friedrich 24,000 BTU (Floating Air Pro Series)

The upper wall installation makes this unit very low profile and almost unnoticeable. It’s quiet (28dB), but effective, with a SEER rating of 21 for low running costs.

It’s my top pick for homeowners willing to pay more upfront for long-term reliable temperature control.

Shop Friedrich Mini Split Heat Pumps Online

Model To Avoid: Friedrich FSHW243 (Floating Air Select Series)

The Friedrich Floating Air Select Series is the lowest spec with fewer features and lower-quality compressor systems.

This unit performs well but is louder (up to 58dB) and less efficient (only 17 SEER) than newer Friedrich mini-splits.

I recommend investing in the Pro Series to get more long-term value.

CONS
  • Lacks advanced technology
  • Less efficient than other brands
  • Can’t operate in extreme conditions

Performance

Goodman mini splits stand out for this dependability with solid inverter compressors and durable components.

I find their units don’t cope as well in cold conditions as brands like Cooper & Hunter or Daikin.

Still, I think Goodman units will provide adequate heating/cooling for most homes.

How Energy Efficient Is It?

Goodman’s efficiency is good, but not stand out. The average SEER rating is 16-18, noticeably lower than other mid-range brands like Mr. Cool or Senville.

What Is The Warranty Like?

Goodman offers a 5-year limited warranty on most mini splits, with a few models with 10 years on parts and compressors.

It's good coverage for mid-range brands and adds to the dependability of the units.

Is It Value for Money?

I think Goodman hits the sweet spot of value by offering competitively priced units that function reliably.

The E-Series is a fraction of the price of Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, or Friedrich models and offers solid long-term value for homeowners with less flexible budgets.

Series Overview

E-Series

Best for homeowners seeking solid performance at a lower price than most mid-range brands.

Key Features:
  • Up to 18 SEER
  • Good efficiency for price
  • Inverter compressor
  • Runs quietly under 40 dB
  • Tough and durable

Top Model: Goodman E-Series 12,000 BTU

For most homes, I recommend the 12,000 BTU E-Series model because it has enough capacity to be used versatilely in any medium-sized space.

Shop Goodman Mini Splits Online

Model To Avoid: Goodman E-Series - 18,000 BTU

The 18,000 BTU model performs well but is too powerful for single-home use and struggles across multiple zones.

It can be useful, but I think the larger MR.COOL or Pioneer systems offer better value for money.

  • Good warranty coverage

CONS
  • Less consistent quality than premium brands
  • Hard to source parts in some regions
  • Customer support is lacking

Performance

The performance varies across Gree systems, but the high-end Vireo and Sapphire series provide excellent heating and cooling, with units that can operate below -13°F. They have:

  • Advanced G10 inverter systems for greater efficiency & precision.
  • iFeel technology for automatic temperature adjustment.

How Energy Efficient Is It?

The efficiency varies across the product line, but Gree’s top-tier Vireo and Sapphire Series offer impressive 25 SEER ratings.

They’re far more efficient than Goodman or Cooper & Hunter, keeping operating costs low.

What Is The Warranty Like?

Gree offers a solid 5-year parts warranty and a 7-year compressor warranty. It’s not as extensive as some premium brands but more than comparably priced models.

Is It Value for Money?

The combination of performance and features makes the top-tier Gree units (especially the Vireo Series) good value for money.

I think they hit the sweet spot with smart features, fast temperature control, self-diagnosis functionality, and affordable mid-range pricing.

Series Overview

Gree has a diverse product line, but the Vireo Series stands out for me.

Vireo Series

Best for homeowners balancing performance, smart features, and cost.

Key Features:
  • Impressive efficiency ratings up to 25.3 SEER
  • Unique Gree G10 inverter technology
  • Indoor units below 30 dB
  • Wi-Fi enabled
  • Self cleaning
  • Self diagnosis functionality
  • Fair pricing

Top Model: Gree 18,000 BTU 3VIR18HP230V1

Of all the Gree models I’ve used, this one strikes the best balance between power, energy efficiency, features, and price.

It has all the impressive Gree technology and will cool large open spaces easily.

Shop Gree Online

Model To Avoid: Gree 24,000 BTU 3VIR24HP230V1

This powerful Gree system is effective but overkill for most homes and noisier than the other Gree models.

It doesn’t support multi-zone climate control and I think a model like the Mitsubishi MSZ-GL24NA offers better versatility and value.

  • Smart integration on most models
  • Warranty coverage on DIY fittings

CONS
  • Not well-suited to extreme climates
  • Basic features & technology
  • DIY skills required to get the best value

Performance

Klimaire mini splits offer decent performance but lack the high-end performance or features of more established brands, and the operation is less effective in cold temperatures.

However, I like the iFeel temperature control and find the smart integration works well - making the units easy to use.

How Energy Efficient Is It?

Klimaire mini-splits have average SEER ratings of 18-20.

They lack the advanced inverters of Daikin, Mitsubishi, or even Gree, but the efficiency is fair at this price point.

What Is The Warranty Like?

Klimaire offers a 5-year warranty on compressors and 2 years on parts - including DIY installations (if you follow the specifications).

It's not industry-leading, but it's good protection at this price.

Is It Value for Money?

The main reason I recommend Klimaire is the overall affordability and value for money.

Their mini-splits are significantly cheaper than many competitors and the DIY options remove installation costs.

If you’re DIY-confident and budget-conscious, you’ll get value from Klimaire.

Series Overview

There are two Kilmaire Series I recommend.

KSIV Series

Best for homes requiring air purification and minimal noise disruption.

Key Features:
  • Requires professional installation
  • Options up to 24000 BTU
  • Up to 21.5 SEER
  • Advanced air filtration system
  • Wi-Fi enabled
  • As low as 25 dB

DIY Series

Best for budget conscious homeowners willing to handle installation themselves.

Key Features:
  • Designed for self-installation
  • Options available up to 36000 BTUs
  • Up to 18 SEER
  • Basic filtration systems
  • Wi-Fi enabled
  • Moderate noise levels of 40 to 50 dB

Top Model: Klimaire 18K BTU DIY Mini Split

The best-value Klimaire mini splits are the DIY models, and this one is my top pick.

It has good efficiency (19 SEER), is Wi-Fi enabled, and can cover 1000 square feet comfortably.

For DIY enthusiasts, it offers reliable temperature control at a low upfront cost.

Shop Klimaire Online

Model To Avoid: Klimaire KSIV24HP

This unit is affordable but suffers from using older components. It only achieves a 17 SEER rating and lacks the smart features of other Klimaire models.

If you need 24,000 BTU output, I recommend the Gree Vireo 3VIR24HP230V1 instead.

  • Easy to use

CONS
  • Lower build quality - shorter lifespan than most brands
  • Short warranty
  • Basic features and some issues with Wi-Fi connectivity

Performance

Rovsun mini-splits are lower quality than most well-known brands but work well in medium-sized homes.

Their units have several running modes (including ECO & Turbo) and smart integration on newer systems.

They won't perform reliably for as long as Mitsubishi or Fujitsu, but the performance matches mid-range brands like Goodman.

How Energy Efficient Is It?

Most Rovsun mini split systems have 16-19 SEER ratings, with their best models providing 20+ SEER.

The efficiency falls short of brands like Cooper & Hunter, Senville, or Gree - but is reasonable for the price.

What Is The Warranty Like?

Rovsun only offers a 1-year warranty on their mini-split heat pumps, far less than most brands.

I don't consider Rovsun units the best long-term investment anyway, but the short warranty impacts the overall value.

Is It Value for Money?

Rovsun provides good functionality at a low price and offers some value. However, I find their units lower quality than most mid-range brands and the warranty lacking.

They can work well as a short-term solution but they will only meet basic heating/cooling needs.

Series Overview

I usually recommend smart-enabled systems because they work more effectively, but standard systems are more budget-friendly.

Rovsun has a less diverse product range and only one main design. Almost all models are DIY friendly (with varying complexities) with a choice of BTU capacities & SEER levels.

When choosing Rovsun mini-splits, there are two main options:

Key Features:
  • Smart systems: Wi-Fi connectivity and an app for smartphone control. They will cost more, although usually under $800.
  • Standard systems: No smart integration and are more difficult to program and monitor. However, they are usually $100-$200 cheaper.

I usually recommend smart-enabled systems because they work more effectively, but standard systems are more budget-friendly.

Top Model: Rovsun DIY G46000644+G46000645

This smart-enabled system is cheap and effective. It can cover 600 square feet, and the 23 SEER puts the efficiency on par with brands like Gree.

It’s my top entry-level DIY model pick for homeowners on tight budgets.

Shop ROVSUN Online

Model To Avoid: Rovsun G46000638+G46000639

Rovsun systems aren't exactly cutting-edge, but I find this one too outdated to work with.

It has a low cooling output and a limited 17 SEER rating, impacting the overall value.

I recommend spending slightly more on the Rovsun 12,000 23 SEER G46000646+G46000647 instead.

Pros

CONS
  • Not very efficient
  • No inverter technology or smart integration.
  • Limited product range

Performance

OLMO mini splits are decidedly middle-of-the-road. They don't have high-end features, fancy inverter systems, or smart integration, but they cool and heat quickly.

They have 5 different running modes, automatic defrost, and simple controls. It's not precision temperature control, but they will do the job.

How Energy Efficient Is It?

OLMO mini-splits are generally around 16 SEER, noticeably lower than mid-tier brands like Goodman or Senville.

They will cost more to run, and I don't recommend them to energy-conscious buyers.

What Is The Warranty Like?

OLMO offers a 5-year warranty on their mini-splits, which is good for a budget brand and helps to improve the long-term value.

Is It Value for Money?

OLMO units are priced competitively compared to higher-end brands but provide the same basic functionality.

They lack advanced features and are less durable than Klimaire, Cooper & Hunter, or Gree. However, they offer short-term value for budget buyers.

Series Overview

Like Rovsun, OLMO doesn’t have an extensive product range.

However, I find their Alpic ECO Series mini splits the best option for homes with basic cooling needs because:

Key Features:
  • They’re affordable
  • They’re easy to use and maintain - with self-diagnosis and washable filters
  • They have a remote control and several settings, including sleep mode and automatic operation
  • They can reach up to 16.5 SEER - not bad for the price.
  • They have an auto-restart function

Top Model: Alpic ECO Series (‎‎OS-EL12ALP230V)

This is OLMO’s most efficient model (16.8 SEER), with enough capacity to cover medium-sized spaces in moderate climates.

The low cost and simplicity make it one of my top picks for less experienced buyers on very tight budgets.

Shop OLMO Online

Model To Avoid: OLMO Alpic ECO Series (S-EL09ALP115V)

This model has reasonable efficiency, but the low BTU output makes it less versatile.

It's only suitable for small rooms, but the relatively high decibel rating (45-50dB) could quickly get annoying.

If you need an affordable solution for small spaces, I recommend a Rovsun model instead.

  • Limited product choice
  • Limited warranty - only 1-2 years
  • Poor performance in extreme conditions

Performance

DELLA mini splits are not the most powerful, with far less effective compressor systems than brands like Senville or Gree.

However, their newer models work quietly and quickly, benefiting from automatically adjusting airflow linked to smart sensors, and in moderate climates they are as good as any mid-range brand.

How Energy Efficient Is It?

DELLA mini-splits have fair energy efficiency ratings for the price, generally around 16-20.

I recommend looking for TL or JBP models with 18-20 SEER for the lowest operating costs.

What Is The Warranty Like?

DELLA offers a short warranty period of 1-2 years on parts and compressors, which is below the industry average.

DELLA mini splits aren't top quality, so the short warranty impacts the long-term value.

Is It Value for Money?

DELLA mini splits offer good short-term value and are ideal for low-cost cooling in moderate climates.

They make a solid entry-level choice, but I don’t expect them to last more than 3-6 years - impacting their long-term value.

Series Overview

DELLA offers a few mini-slit product lines, but they are all similar. The two that stand out for me are the TL Series and the JBP Series.

TL Series

Best for those seeking budget-friendly DIY options with solid output.

Key Features:
  • DIY options available
  • Options from 9000 to 24000 BTUs
  • Basic smart features
  • Affordable pricing
  • Inverter technology with 16-20 SEER ratings
  • Operates under 45 dB

JBP Seires

Best for high capacity heating and cooling systems that offer whole home solutions.

Key Features:
  • Mostly professional fitting required
  • Higher capacity models up to 36000 BTUs
  • Up to 20 SEER
  • Most models have smart features
  • Supports up to 5 indoor units
  • Runs quietly, under 35 dB

Top Model: DELLA 12,000 BTU TL Series

This value DIY system is easy to install, covers 500 square feet quickly, has a 19 SEER rating, and even has Wi-Fi connectivity.

It’s not the most durable unit I’ve worked with, but is very cheap (under $750) and ideal for limited budgets.

Shop DELLA Online

Model To Avoid: DELLA 24,000 BTU TL Series

This DELLA system is efficient (19 SEER), but I found the heating mode underperformed during testing.

It's also noisy (over 50dB) and relatively expensive compared to other DELLA models.

If you are willing to spend slightly more on a high-capacity unit, I recommend Gree instead.

Performance

COSTWAY mini splits performance is average.

The design choices (like the gold fin fan) help to speed up heat transfer, and the five operating modes allow for customizable output.

However, the compressors are less precise than other brands and their units have limited smart features.

How Energy Efficient Is It?

COSTWAY units are typically 16-18 SEER, with a few models reaching 20 SEER (like the 12,000 BTU unit I recommend).

COSTWAY offers an 8-year warranty, far more comprehensive than similarly priced models and on par with Mitsubishi systems.

It adds to the overall long-term value of these budget units.

Is It Value for Money?

COSTWAY’s low-cost units lack advanced features, but I recommend them as a basic & affordable option for homeowners who value simplicity.

The easy installation, simple controls, and self-cleaning functionality make them good value for those seeking low-effort temperature control.

Series Overview

COSTWAY doesn’t categorize mini split heat pumps into distinct series like many other brands, but there are 3 main choices:

Standard Models

These units have basic functionality, less advanced compressors, and no Wi-Fi connectivity. They only reach 16-18 SEER but are easy to install.

They’re best for budget-conscious buyers seeking straightforward systems for moderate climates.

Example:
  • COSTWAY 13847269 9,000 BTU 17 SEER

Inverter Models

These units cost slightly more but use inverter technology for improved efficiency (18-20 SEER) and quieter operation.

They’re best for energy-conscious homeowners looking to keep bills down.

Example:
  • COSTWAY 56183940 18,000 BTU 19 SEER

Wi-Fi Models

These units are Wi-Fi-enabled, allowing for smart integration and app control. They often have inverter technology and reach 17-19 SEER ratings.

These newer models are more expensive and best for tech-savvy users.

Example:
  • COSTWAY 41728536 22,000 BTU 21 SEER

Top Model: COSTWAY 41728536

This mini split is competitively priced, Wi-Fi enabled, and efficient (21 SEER) thanks to the more advanced inverter technology.

I think it’s COSTWAY’s best mini-split, and I recommend it for quick temperature management across medium-sized areas.

Shop Costway Online

Model To Avoid: COSTWAY 13847269 9,000 BTU

This mini-split uses old compressor technology and has limited output.

It’s noisy and less efficient (17 SEER) than newer COSTWAY units, so I recommend spending $100 more on a more efficient inverter model.

Ask Yourself These Questions Before Buying Any Mini Split Heat Pump

Consider Who Will Be Installing It?

There are two main options for mini-split heat pump installation: professional or DIY.

  • Professional installation ensures the system is set up correctly for optimal performance and protects the warranty. You can find qualified HVAC professionals through the brand’s website or by searching directories [3].
  • DIY installation saves money upfront (sometimes thousands of dollars) but can lead to complications or void the warranty.

ACLAB Note:

Most models require professional installation for safety reasons because of the refrigerant.[4] Don’t attempt DIY installation unless it’s a sealed DIY mini split system.

What's Your Budget?

Mini-split heat pumps can vary, ranging from $500 for budget models and $5000 for high-end units. When budgeting, you should consider:

  • Upfront costs
  • Installation costs
  • Running costs

If you have a flexible budget, I recommend a Mitsubishi, Daikin, or Fujitsu system because they offer the best long-term value.

If your budget is limited, look for Goodman, OLMO, or Rovsun models for decent performance without the bells and whistles.

How Many Rooms Need Cooling and What BTUs Do I Need?

A big mistake I see homeowners making is buying the wrong size mini-split for their home.

The size of the space you’re cooling/heating should match the BTU (British Thermal Unit) mini-split capacity.[5] The table below shows approximate BTU requirements.

Area (square feet)

BTUs needed

150-400

5,000-9,000

400-600

9,000-12,000

600-1000

12,000-18,000

1000-1500

18,000-24,000

1500+

24,000+

ACLAB Note:

As a general rule, I add 1000 BTU for high ceilings and 20% more BTU for poorly insulated spaces.

Daikin Multi-Zone Series

How Long Are The Warranty and Service Plans?

Most quality mini-splits come with 5 to 7year parts and compressor coverage, with labor warranties varying from 1-3 years.

Extended warranties are usually available, and I recommend them for expensive systems, complex installations, or long-term use.

Daikin offers the most coverage with a 12-year standard warranty, while budget brands like Rovsun offer minimal coverage.

I recommend at least:

  • 5 years on top-tier brands
  • 3 years on mid-range brands
  • 1 year on entry-level brands to cover any initial defects

What Is The Energy Efficiency Rating Like?

Mini-split efficiency is measured by SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) rating, typically ranging from 15-30.[6]

I consider anything above 20 SEER highly efficient, but I recommend aiming for at least 16-18 SEER.

The Fujitsu Airstage systems are the most efficient I’ve worked with, reaching over 33 SEER, and Mitsubishi, Daikin, and Friedrich are also impressive(typically above 23 SEER).

Higher SEER units cost more upfront but can reduce running costs by 5-10% per 1-2 SEER increase.

If possible, I recommend investing in higher-efficiency systems for long-term savings.

What Is The Noise Level?

Mini-splits are generally quieter than other HVAC systems, with indoor units at 20-40dB and outdoor units at 40- 60 dB.

Always check the specs before buying to avoid a disuptively noisy model.[]

15 Best Mini Split Heat Pump Brands - Ranking These ACs (19)

Higher-end models tend to be less noisy due to advanced compressors.

For bedrooms, I recommend models that run below 35dB, but you can get away with noisier models in living areas.

Mitsubishi and Friedrich are my top choices for noise-sensitive homes, with units running under 25 dB. Budget brands, like Rovsun (40-50dB) are better suited for living areas.

Do All ACs On The List Have Heating Options?

All the HVAC brands I listed offer mini-split heat pumps with heating & cooling operations.

Top-tier brands like Mitsubishi, Daikin, and Fujitsu offer superior heating in their mini-splits but mid-range options, like Goodman and Pioneer, provide decent heating.

Budget brands, like OLMO and COSTWAY, are best for supplemental heating only.

I recommend choosing a brand and model based on your primary heating needs and climate.

FAQs

How difficult are ductless mini-split air conditioners to install yourself?

Most systems require professional installation for safety reasons but even specific DIY mini-split systems are only suitable for those with experience. Consider your skills and local regulations before deciding.

How long do mini-split air conditioners last?

Mini split air conditioners usually last 10-15 years with proper maintenance, servicing, and cleaning - but it varies depending on the quality. Budget models typically last under 10 years, and top-tier models can last 15-20 years.

How much does it cost to install a ductless mini-split AC?

Professional ductless mini-split installation typically ranges from $1500-$4500 depending on the system complexity and local labor rates.

How often should you clean the AC and replace the filter?

AC filters should be cleaned monthly and replaced every 6-12 months.

Which Mini Split Heat Pump Brand Is Best?

Mitsubishi Electric is the clear stand-out brand for mini split heat pumps.

I find the build quality second to none, with high-quality components, industry-leading compressor technology, and efficiency levels far higher than most competitors (up to 33.1 SEER).

They also have smart features and impressive BTU output.

Mitsubishi models are pricey, but I recommend them for homeowners with flexible budgets willing to invest more upfront to get long-term value.
