Indonesian Efl Students’ Writing Anxiety in Post-Pandemic Online Classroom Context: A Survey

ESL and EFL students consider writing as challenging in both cognitive and affective aspects. In ideal circ*mstances, they may suffer from difficulties during the writing process, including anxiety or even tension. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic condition has made the teaching and learning writing more complicated due to limited time and space to meet, to discuss, to collaborate, and to give as well as take feedbacks for their writing. Writing anxiety has been considered a significant hindrance for most Indonesian EFL students. With a growing number of available literatures on this issue, this paper aims to grasp the trends and deliver some implications to the national and local context. The available researches are the ones that have been published from 2017 to 2021. The subjects in those researches are university students majoring in English department. This review is one of the steps in pre-research on students’ anxiety in research courses and it has been done by using scoping study method. Survey on EFL Students’ Writing Anxiety: Level, Types, and Causes

This study attempts to investigate the EFL learners’ writing anxiety. Being more specific, the researcher was interested to measure the EFL learners’ writing anxiety levels, to find out types of writing anxieties (i.e., Somatic Anxiety, Cognitive Anxiety, Avoidance Behavior), and elaborate the triggering factors of writing anxiety. The research subjects were 28students who registered for Essay Writing in English Study Program; Two different questionnaires were administered to gather the data; SLWAI questionnaire designed by Cheng (2004) and another questionnaire developed by Zhang (2011). To investigate the level of writing anxiety and its types, the data from the SLWAI questionnaire were analyzed and calculated to find the mean. Factors affecting male and female Indonesian EFL students’ writing anxiety

This study is aimed at investigating the writing anxiety levels of foreign language learners and factors affecting the foreign language writing anxiety levels on the learners based on the gender variable. It applies close-ended questionnaires as instruments to collect the data, adopted from Cheng (2004) about Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI), and Causes of Writing Anxiety Inventory (CWAI) questionnaire adopted from Younas (2014). The results of the study show that Indonesian English learners suffered a mediocre level of English writing anxiety, especially cognitive anxiety as preference. In relation to gender, female students tend to have significantly higher anxiety level than male in terms of writing English compositions. The study reports that both male and female learners suffered from anxiety due to lack of linguistic competence.

The present research purposes were to find the factors of students’ writing anxiety and to know what the type of writing anxiety in writing encountered by the participants who followed writing for academic communication course of English education study program at Hamzanwadi University, Nusa Tenggara Barat, Indonesia. This study was categorized as descriptive quantitative method research. The researcher took 15 subjects who were chosen by using purposive sampling. AN INVESTIGATIVE STUDY ON THE TYPES AND CAUSES OF ESL WRITING ANXIETY: A CASE STUDY OF LEARNERS FROM A CHINESE INDEPENDENT MIDDLE SCHOOL

Feelings of fear, anxiety, and worry make the learning of ESL / EFL difficult as learners' focus is being interrupted. Writing; whether in first or second language, is considered a difficult process. The arousal of negative psychological experience in a second/foreign language writing is known as foreign language writing anxiety. As such, the underlying causes of ESL / EFL anxiety need to be understood to ensure a smooth language writing process for ESL / EFL learners. This study aims to investigate the level, types, and causes of writing anxiety among the students in a Chinese Independent Middle School. A convenience sample total of 30 Chinese Independent Middle School students were purposely chosen to participate in this study. This research adopted two survey questionnaires; Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI) by Cheng (2004) and Causes of Writing Anxiety Inventory (CWAI) by Rezaeia & Jafari (2014). The findings revealed that these students experience a high level of cognitive anxiety, moderate level of somatic anxiety, and low level of avoidance behaviour. It is discovered that the level of writing anxiety being experienced by the students is at the level of moderate to high anxiety. Meanwhile, in terms of the causal factor for writing anxiety, the results reported high means scores for each causal of writing anxiety theme are 'afraid of writing tests' for negative writing experience theme, 'feel worried to write under time constraints' for negative writing attitude theme and 'often encounter some linguistic problems' for limit writing knowledge and skill theme. The researcher proposed some strategies that could be used in reducing ESL writing anxiety which are: process writing approach, affective strategies, positive error correction, and vocabulary knowledge enhancement.

Writing Anxiety among Indonesian EFL College Students: Levels, Causes, and Coping Strategies

This research aimed at investigating foreign language writing anxiety experienced by Indonesian EFL learners studying at Universitas Negeri Padang. The numbers of participants involved in this survey were 132 students comprising of sophom*ores, junior, and senior students. This research employed three research instruments: Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI) to collect data on students’ levels of writing anxiety; Causes of Writing Anxiety Inventory (CWAI) to gauge information about sources of students’ writing anxiety; typologies of tactics to cope with writing anxiety. The result of this research reveals that the level of students’ writing anxiety is moderate. The aim of this qualitative research is to identify types of writing anxiety faced by students when writing English academic article in sixth semester at Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Ampel Surabaya and to explore their ways to anticipate writing anxiety. Fear of writing can be caused my many reasons. Some reasons come from the learners, some from the teachers and some from the surrounding environment. A learner with negative feelings towards writing may present this fear into having writing anxiety when it comes to classrooms activities. This fear can become a never-ending cycle of fear towards writing. This pilot study is done on 108 respondents to find. Out the influence of perceived difficulties, reasons for writing and writing anxiety on ESL academic writing. The instrument used is a 56-items survey with 5 likert scales. Findings of the study displayed an interesting self-prophecy towards writing. The results of the study revealed that many learners’ perception of writing difficulty started in semester one of their study.
