Been working on my photo archive for months for an upcoming show. Got into photography quite heavily in high school and it stuck, became yearbook head photographer in 1978! (probably at the expense of my studies). Thank you negatives for lasting so well in those little sleeves and scanning so well, and now I have 2500 images to edit. (How am I going to find my JPGs years from now?) Thank you also to my trusty Nikon F2 Photomic -- still have this brilliant camera. And thank you to the school for having a working darkroom on site. Here is a 5-image sequence from a football game one fall evening in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Also I note -- no one has a mobile device in this era and all are completely engaged in the event before them. Amazing. #shootfilm #HuronHighSchool

The graphics in this article are stunning! Lots of questions -- would a data center ever be forced into a brownout mode to save electricity for the surrounding community in times of extreme demand? Who receives priority? "In late 2022, Dominion [Energy Virginia] filed a previously unreported letter to its regulators asking for permission to build new substations and power lines to serve 'unprecedented' load growth. In the letter, Dominion said it experienced 18 load relief warnings in the spring of that year. These warnings occur when the grid operator tells the company that it might need to shed load, the technical term for the controlled interruption of power to customers, which could include rotating outages.'This is far outside of the normal, safe operating protocol,' Dominion told regulators."

Interestingly, Apple News tipped me off to this -- an interesting case was just settled in Hawaii re: Navahine v. HDOT and I'm wondering how all the electricity will be generated to fulfill this settlement for zero emissions in the transportation sector. (Lead plaintiff, a minor, is a 15 year old native Hawaiian.) According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Hawaii gets 31% of its electricity from renewables (circa 2023). Still, the decision is compelling. Look forward to seeing how it plays out. And one of the major testing points for CO2 is in Hawaii (Mauna Loa Observatory) -- because at that location, all of the atmospheric gases are what is called well-mixed. "[The decision] confirms that youth have constitutional rights to a clean and healthful environment and that the state of Hawaiʻi has an obligation to protect youth’s interest in a stable climate" and "In the Settlement Agreement, the State is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from its statewide transportation system according to “the best scientific evidence today,” as determined by experts. This evidence shows that correcting Earth’s energy imbalance requires reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide to less than 350 parts per million this century." ( see: https://lnkd.in/gthVuWT4 ) And there is this from the decision, from the Terms and Conditions section: "1. GHG Emission Reductions: HDOT will 'take any actions necessary to achieve the goals established' in that section, specifically, 'zero [greenhouse gas] emissions across all sectors of: (1) Ground Transportation and (2) Sea and air interisland transportation.'" What will the future hold for this expensive CP infrastructure? My suggestion -- let's start a Friends of Congestion Pricing Cameras org to protect these cameras. If the contracts are not being cancelled for maintaining them, then will data continue to be collected and anonymized for future study? #congestionpricing #transportationalternatives #streetsblog #chekpeds

Looking forward to learning more about IBM's enVizi. Going through the demo model at the moment with its scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions calcs. Fascinating! Largest number of customers right now apparently are in Australia and U.S., respectively (which makes sense). Was also looking for a tutorial in a PDF if available? #sustainability #enVizi

Just learning about a new form of heat pump designed to work with radiator-equipped homes, 2040 Energy, appearing on the Wefunder platform. "Cast-iron and baseboard radiators need very hot water (typically150°F-175°F) to heat effectively on the coldest days. Today’s heat pumps just can’t do it – and even when they get close, their heating power drops off rapidly. This means homeowners can’t simply replace their boiler with a heat pump – they must either undertake a major renovation to forced-air heating, or install a fleet of ductless heat pumps throughout their house. We are working to solve this problem." What do you think about this?https://lnkd.in/eXabvFsG

Just picked this up yesterday at a local bookshop. (Shout out to The Three Arts bookstore (Poughkeepsie) for bringing it to my attention). According to the LA Times: "It's a romp, packed with tales of anger, violence, theft, lust, greed political chicanery, and transportation policy gone wrong...highly entertaining." #PavedParadise

Looks like a prediction at the end of "The Big Short" is coming true: "Some of the world’s largest investment banks, pension funds and insurers, including Manulife Financial Corp.’s John Hanco*ck unit, TIAA and UBS, have been depleting California’s groundwater to grow high-value nuts, leaving less drinking water for the surrounding communities, according to aBloomberg Greeninvestigation. Wall Street has come to Woodville, wringing it dry. Since 2010, six major investors have quadrupled their farmland under management in California, to almost 120,000 acres in all, equivalent to a third of all the cropland in Connecticut."
