Raymond was born August 7, 1941 in Syracuse, NY to the late Michael Pasternak and Anna Buhaj Pasternak. He was a graduate of Syracuse University and was employed with Niagara Mohawk Power as a nuclear engineer.
He was later the resi- dent manager of Nine Mile One and Nine Mile Two with the James E. Fitzpatrick Nuclear Power Plant. Raymond never met a stranger, and he served his community well in Fulton, NY, serving as President of the Fulton Lions Club. Raymond is survived by his wife of 48 years, Carol Wenzel Pasternak; daughter, Jill DeCan- dio and her husband, George; granddaughter, Jenna Elizabeth DeCandio all of Cary; several cousins and many friends. Mary Eliz- abeth, daughter of the late Otelia House Ferrell and Walter Rel- due Ferrell was born in Wake County. She is sur- vived by her devoted husband of 70 years, Samuel Ray Collins, Sr.
and was the mother of four children Dolores Bagley (John), Samuel Ray Collins, Jr. (Jill), Ronald G. Collins (Julie) and Lynn Strother, grandchil- dren Lisa Hahn, Chris Bagley, Kelly Muller, Samantha Collins and Jessica Strother, and great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Mertie Tibbins, Birdie Lee Wall, Virginia Ferrell and her dear niece Eleanor Seawell. After graduating from Knight- dale High School she went to work for Hudson Belk as a book- keeper where she met the love of her life, Ray.
Mary and Ray were part owners of Collins-Warren Drive-In, where she was famous for her delicious chocolate pies. Later in life after raising her children she retired from the Wake County School System Child Nutrition Services where she was a cashier at Fred A. Smith Elementary School. After her marriage she be- came an active member of Er- nest Myatt Presbyterian Church where she received an Honorary Life Membership in the Women of the Church on September 27, 1968. She was an energetic, joy- ous and dedicated Christian, who has served the Master in all walks of life In the home as a loving and devoted wife and mother; In the community as a good Samaritan to the bereaved and needy; In the con- gregation by faithful attendance and through active participa- tion as Church School Teacher, Youth Advisor, Counselor, Bible Moderator, Committee Mem- ber, served two terms as a Dea- con, two terms as an Elder and served two terms as president of the Women of the Church.

com Mildred Mae Shook DECEMBER 15, 1953 FEBRUARY 7, 2012 DURHAM Eleanore Spring Barrett, of Durham, North Carolina, passed away Sunday, February 5, 2012 at the Meadowlands Hospice in Hillsborough, NC, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Ellie was born May 7, 1929 to Gertrude and John Spring in New Rochelle, NY, where she spent her childhood. In 1948, Ellie married Raymond Barrett, also of New Rochelle, and began married life as a diplomatic fam- ily in the Foreign Service, rais- ing 5 children in varied posts, including Mexico, Nicaragua, Ireland, Egypt, Wisconsin, Spain, Washington, DC and Fort Bragg, N.C. In retirement, Ellie lived with her husband in New Jersey, Switzerland, and North Carolina. After his death, she moved to Spokane, Washington, living there until moving back to Durham, N.C.

He success- fully battled Lymphoma for 10 years, until succumbing to Acute Lymphatic Leukemia. A celebration of his life will be held at Pullen Memorial Bap- tist Church, 1801 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh on Saturday, February 18th at 11am. He leaves his wife of 39 years, Marilyn Morrissette Brandt; son James Bartie (Bucky) Brandt of Raleigh, son Robert Kelly Brandt and his wife, Lacey Pfaff Brandt of Wellesley, MA; stepson Ed- ward Newton Upchurch and his wife, Elizabeth Kelly Upchurch of Raleigh; grandchildren Mar- got Kelly Brandt and Beau Law- rence Brandt of Wellesley MA; and Meredith Forest Upchurch, Kathryn Walker Upchurch and Caroline Kelly Upchurch of Ra- leigh. Brandt was born September 20, 1926, in Brooksville, MS to Bartholomew Brandner Brandt and Lucile Peterson Brandt.
He was named for his uncle, James Lewis Peterson, an army reserve pilot who was killed in an automobile accident just weeks before Brandt was born. He grew up in Washing- ton (NC), Durham, and Green- ville, as the family moved with his academic career. But most of his summers were spent in Brooksville where his grand- father owned a general store, a house and farm. Brandt enlisted in the Navy in 1944 serving as an Electronics Mate. At the end of the war, he was assigned to San Francisco where he ted the USS Avery Island, and the USS Wharton with electron- ics in support of the post-war atomic bomb tests.
He turned down an opportunity to conduct the testing at Bikini Atoll, and, instead, moth-balled an aircraft carrier escort, the USS Nassau, in Bremerton, WA. came home from the Navy calling himself and obtained work in October, 1946, at a radio station in Green- ville, WGTC, as a broadcast engi- neer. One of his on-air duties was to produce the coverage of local minor league baseball games. They have the budget to broadcast from the park, so an announcer would read a teletype transmission of the play-by-play and describe it as if he were at the game. job was to provide realistic sound effects, like crowd noises, by playing sound bites from a record at the appropriate time.
father, Dr. B. B. Brandt, was appointed to the zoology faculty at North Caro- lina State University in Janu- ary, 1947, and so the young man moved with his parents to Ra- leigh. He chose to study Archi- tecture at the new NCSU School of Design because, he said, like to see things get In 1951 he became the editor of the Publications of the School of It contin- ued to be published regularly for at least 27 years.
Brandt graduated in 1951 with honors having earned a B. A. in Architecture. That summer he married Mary Louise Kelly, a St. College English teacher.
They were divorced in 1971. In November 1951 he was hired by Greensboro architect Edward Lowenstein. Brandt was the most proud of the A. M. and Ruth Fleishman Residence in Fayetteville for which he did the drawings and detail design.
It featured a double cantilevered roof which Brandt described as In late November, 1952, Brandt joined G. Milton Small in Raleigh and became his as- sociate architect. They shared an excitement for Modernist architecture, and they collabo- rated on many notable buildings in the Triangle area and beyond. These include the 1954 Gregory Poole showroom and on Hillsborough Street (with George Matsumoto), the 1957 Home Security Life Building in Durham, the 1962 Northwest- ern Insurance Building, now occupied by the Raleigh Ortho- paedic Clinic at 3515 Glenwood Avenue, the 1963 Bank Building at 119-191 Hay Street in Fayetteville, and the 1971 North Carolina Medical Soci- ety Building at 222 North Per- son Street, Raleigh. At NCSU, buildings they designed include the 1959 Talley Student Cen- ter, which includes his work on Stewart Theater, Price Music Center, and the 1960 University Bookstore (now demolished).
Also with Milton Small, Brandt laid out the Raleigh sub- divisions of Drewry Hills and Oak Park. In addition, he de- signed several of the houses in Drewry Hills. But, his masterpiece, per- haps, is his own 1955 house, since sold, at 122 E. Drewry Lane in Raleigh trianglemodernisthouses.com/ brandt.htm). The Mies van der Rohe inspired design includes a plate glass back wall overlook- ing Crabtree Creek.
The roof was originally covered with custom made arches (since reno- vated) which provided shade and gave the house a futuristic look. The building is suspended on a series of columns, and the cantilevers on the sides and back make the house appear to hover above the steep, wooded lot. After his professional retire- ment in 1991, Brandt devoted his time to genealogical re- search. He published his work in two bound volumes which were distributed to libraries and family members. He researched Peterson for 5 years, and Brandt for 9 years.
A dream of his was when he and his wife Marilyn bought a residence at the beach and they enjoyed many happy hours sailing on Bogue Sound. He passed on to his children and step-children his interests in music, art, photography, sailing, electronics, and woodworking. Brandt was an active mem- ber of Pullen Memorial Bap- tist Church for about 50 years. He served on the building and grounds committee when the church renovated its 3rd into classrooms. He had a special interest in Hope Center and its demonstrated ability to help people reshape their lives.

Born in An- niston, Alabama on Jan. 19, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Harold and Carrie Mitchell.
She was raised on a cotton farm in Jarrett, VA, and later attended Texas University. She had worked as a specialty retail man- ager at and in Williamsburg, VA and as a real estate broker with Coldwell Banker in Raleigh, NC. Hazel had a love for animals, especial- ly cats, and often volunteered at the ASPCA in Raleigh. She also enjoyed gardening, reading, travel, and laughter. Ms.
Ryder is survived by her loving family, including her three sons, Kevin Ryder, Christopher Ryder, and Richard Ryder, two daughters, Patri- cia Ryder and Susan Ryder; her sister, Colleen Daniels; eight grandchildren, Price, Brittany, Cameron, and Laurel Ryder, Nikki Bessette, Radleigh Smith, and Joshua and Elliott Foster.
