Edward Lear (British, 1812-1888), watercolour sketch, 'Ravenna 10.30 AM May 5 1867', marked in pencil verso. 16.4cm x 24.9cm.Lear is known to have done another, almost from the same spot (different light), which was sold at Bonhams lot 71 on the 9 June 2015. The present picture shows Lear's man servant Giorgio and this one also has sketching instructions and the same date, style and brown ink writing, with the time of 10.30am (the Bonhams example '8 am' and sold for £3750) Condition Report: Overall in good condition. The mount has some spots of water damp and discolouration and scuffs. The painting has a small number of extremely faint water marks in the sky area. The colours are bright. No obvious alterations. The paper is not torn or repaired.

Early 19th Century Chinese School - Pair of gouache and watercolour paintings - Birds amongst bamboo, rock work and flowering branches, 20.75ins (52.7cm) x 13.5ins (34.29cm), framed and glazed Note: Each has an English ink inscription to lower border - "Specimen of Chinese Paper. About 1800". Neither of these works has been inspected out of their frames. Peonies and bamboo with two birds - vertical tear at centre measuring approximately 15ins (38cm) from lower margin. It cannot be determined whether or not the tear has been stabilised to verso. Six small tears to left, right and upper edges. Staining to background. Some distortion to paper. Some possible repainting to blue sky. Chrysanthemum and lilies, two birds and moth - some roughly horizontal creasing of paper to centre. At least five small tears from left, upper and lower margins. Staining. Some possible repainting/retouching to sky. The paper slightly bubbled. It isn't possible to tell whether these two works have been stuck down.
