ABBEVILLE -Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005, at St. Theresa Catholic Church for Young A. Broussard, 88, who died Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, in Abbeville.Interment will be at St. Paul Cemetery in Abbeville.The Rev. Floyd Calais will be officiating.Readers will be Michelle E. LaPorte, Danielle L. David, Nicole L. Moss and Erin F. Segura.Mr. Broussard was born in Kaplan, La. in 1916. He attended Mt. Carmel until the seventh grade. He graduated from Abbeville High in 1934. He graduated from L.S.U. and was a member of the L.S.U. Tiger baseball team and was considered one of the best fielding first basem*n by members of the press. Mr. Broussard was a member of the Gueydan High faculty in 1941, 1942 and 1946. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and was sent to officers training in Quantico, Va. He was commissioned for 2nd Lieutenant in 1942 and spent three months in reserve officer class learning military tactics. He served in Samoa, New Zealand, Guadalcanal, Bouganville and New Celadonia. He made the attack on the Japanese in Bouganville where he was in the initial landing. Having contracted malaria, he was sent to Yosenomite National Park for rest and recuperation. Mr. Broussard was discharged in 1945 after being elevated to Captain.He founded Broussard Pontiac-GMC in 1946 which developed into a successful business.Mr. Broussard was elected as a member of the Abbeville City Council under the administration of Mayor J.E. Kibbie serving as mayor-protend. He was reelected in 1954 serving on the Roy Theriot Administration.He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, past commander of the American Legion, past president of the Abbeville Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Abbeville Rotary Club and a Paul Harris fellow.Mr. Broussard was elected mayor of Abbeville in 1962. While mayor he prevailed upon the legislature to place all city employees on Civil Service thereby preventing them from losing jobs with a change of administration.He was a member of the Abbeville Building and Loan Savings Bank serving as its chairman until his death.Mr. Broussard was an avid hunter and fisherman.He was inducted as a living legend at the Earth Museum.For the 2005 Cattle Festival, Mr. Broussard was chosen Citizen of the Year.Survivors include three daughters, Dolores B. Landry and her husband, Paul, Sandra B. Landry and her husband, John T., and Diane B. Frederick and her husband, Lloyd "Jay: Frederick Jr.; eight grandchildren, Todd LaPorte and his wife, Michelle, Troy LaPorte and his wife, Laurie, Michelle E. LaPorte, Danielle L. David and her husband, Lance, Dr. Craig Landry and his wife, Monica, Nicole L. Moss and her husband, Chris, Dr. Brian P. Frederick and Erin F. Segura and her husband, Chris; 11 great-grandchildren, Lauren and Mark LaPorte, Aaron, Caroline and Grant David, Victoria and Ashley Landry, John Ramsey, William and Andrew Moss and Jordan C. Frederick.Mr. Broussard was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie B. Broussard; his brother, Earl P. "DeeDee" Broussard; and his parents, Polycarp L. and Lillian Broussard.A rosary was prayed at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, 2005.Visitation was observed from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. Friday and will continue from 8 a.m. today until time of services.Pallbearers will be Todd M. LaPorte, Troy D. LaPorte, Dr. Craig S. Landry, Dr. Brian P. Frederick, Lance David, Chris Moss and Chris Segura.Special thank from the family to his caregiver of 11 1/2 years, Beverly Gaspard. Thanks also go to his night sitter, Joyce Stelly, and weekend sitters, Jessica Bourque and Gladys Briggs. These women gave Daddy care and comfort during his years after Mom died.
