Darryl Sittler and family mourn loss of wife, Wendy TORONTO Darryl Sittler recalled fondly his years with wife Wendy and said he was thankful for their relationship. Sittler mourned the loss of Wendy with his family Sunday, one day after she lost her three-year battle with colon cancer. She was 53. "It's been a tough time, but I made the effort to make a list of things I am thankful for and it was comforting," Sittler said from his East Amherst, N.Y., home after finishing Thanksgiving dinner with his family. "I'm thankful for the years I had with Wendy, for the family we shared together and for the positive influence she's had on the people she met." A doctor found a tumour in her liver in September after she had been in remission.

She had been active in Canadian Press fundraising for research into colon cancer, which often goes undetected because serious symptoms only appear at advanced stages. "It's hard to detect early," Sittler said. "We knew that the outlook wasn't good for Wendy since last year, and I'm glad she was at home when she passed." Wendy had been in hospital 18 days before returning home Friday. Sittler said he plans to spread: Wendy's cremated ashes in a private ceremony with their children at the family's summer home in Orillia, Ont. "Much of our life revolved around the Toronto area," he said.

"We feel that's an appropriate place for the family to honour her." Wendy is also survived by children Ryan, 27, Meaghan, 25, and Ashley, 20. Wendy Sitter's funeral will take place tomorrow at Eastern Hills Wesleyan Church in Williamsville, N.Y.
